Quartz or Granite?

The most important decision when choosing a worktop is the material that the worktop is made from. This impacts how long it will last you and the durability. As we specialise in both we feel we have expertise to speak in this area. However the ultimate choice of what to go for is a matter of personal opinion and preference as will be explained in more detail.

First what even are they?  You may have never heard of these terms before but keep stumbling on them now that you are looking for worktops. Both quartz and granite are popular choices for kitchens. The main difference between the 2 is that Granite is a natural stone  mined from quarries whilst quartz is a man made engineered material that is manufactured instead of mined.

So what is the big deal about GRANITE?

Due to it being a natural stone it means that no 2 pieces of granite are the same so it will give your kitchen a unique look making it look like no other kitchen.

It is also more heat resistant than quartz and since it is a harder material it is more durable.

However , it does require a lot of maintenance so that it remains durable.  This is because granite needs to be sealed 1-2 times a year.  So even though it is more durable than quartz it is harder to maintain than quartz.

What about quartz?

Since quartz are man-made they can imitate marble and other materials. This is great especially with famous designs like calacatta and carrara marble which are not suitable for kitchens.

So if you want a design to look like that but with better qualities for a kitchen quartz is your option.

Unlike granite quartz does not require resealing so it is easier to maintain and clean. Quartz is also less likely to chip or crack since it is scratch resistant. It is also non porous meaning it will not absorb liquids and so will not stain whilst granite is porous and does absorb.

We like both quartz and granite (and thats why we supply and install both) They both have great qualities and it is a matter of personal preference and whether you have the time to reseal and maintain then granite is perfect for you since its design is unparalleled . Granite is more durable than quartz but requires more maintenance whilst quartz is easier to maintain and scratch and stain resistant.

So the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and what qualities you would prefer in a worktop.
